Going on Erasmus is a time of excitement and adventure, but it can also be daunting. For many students, it is their first time travelling alone. For others, it is their first time living away from home. After speaking to a variety of students I have compiled a list of things you should know before your Erasmus.

Join your University's Clubs and Societies
It is likely that when you move abroad you won’t know anyone. This can be rather daunting for students as they try to settle into their new homes. Luckily universities abroad also offer a variety of societies and clubs to get involved with. These are a great way to make new friends and to possibly try new things!
Make Time for Self Care
Erasmus can be overwhelming. You have to juggle your classes, assignments, chores, budgeting, making friends, and often speaking a different language! While you will be eager to explore your new home and to be socialising with potential friends, it is also important to make time for self care. This can look different for everyone but watching a comfort show with a nice snack works like a charm!
Join a Run Club
Joining a run club on your Erasmus has lots of benefits! Firstly, it helps you to stay fit which may be useful if you don’t have access to a gym abroad. Secondly, run clubs are very social spaces making them another great option for meeting new people. Finally, run clubs can be a great way to see new places that you have not seen before. Running around the area can also help you get to know it sooner.
Don't Wait for the Fun to Happen
Make it happen for yourself. A lot of people who go on Erasmus do not have a lot of experience living away from home for extended periods, and the experience that is promised may be a bit slow to take off, but everyone who goes on Erasmus is going through something similar. Be open to new experiences and don't be afraid to meet new people. Erasmus is not just a programme but a community as well. You will absolutely make friends for life if you put yourself out there.
Become a Local at your Erasmus Destination
Locals will pick up on your enthusiasm for inhabiting a culture different from your own and they will always appreciate the effort you put into speaking the language, and respecting the rules and customs of their country. It's a leap out of the comfort zone for many, but a rewarding experience.
Know the Difference in University Standards
The standard for a pass at your exchange university may differ from your home university. For example, one student I spoke to went to Toulouse, France. A pass was 50%, but that’s not the same standard as a 50% here. It can be quite difficult to sustain a pass, especially when doing the course through a different language. If your classes grade your attendance or if there is any form of continual assessment make sure to keep up with it to reduce stress around exam periods.
Get an ISIC Card
The International Student Identity Card has been sold in Ireland since the 1970’s. Their mission is to develop and deliver to students a wide variety of benefits and advantages covering all areas of culture, entertainment, leisure, sports, and travel. The card is recognised by universities, academic institutions, student organisations, national governments, and ministries of education around the world. The card is a great companion for Erasmus as it offers a variety of discounts and can be used as a form of ID. Get your card here today!
We hope this list helps with you preparing for your Erasmus. Make sure to email any scandals that happen to be featured in The Spanner!
